Hate Love: A Gothic Blackletter Font for Handmade Branding and Product Design

Hate Love in Action: Designing a Candle Label with Gothic Charm

While preparing a new line of handmade soy candles with a dark, mystical theme, I reached for Hate Love to craft the product labels. As a blackletter font, it immediately brought a medieval, alternative vibe that matched the essence of the candle scents—think "Midnight Forest" and "Witch’s Brew." The font’s ornate serifs and dramatic strokes gave the labels a bold presence, standing out on matte black packaging. It wasn’t just about looks—Hate Love helped communicate the brand story before the customer even smelled the candle.

Hate Love for Wedding Invitations and Alternative Stationery

Testing Hate Love on wedding stationery was a fun experiment. For a gothic-themed bridal shoot, I used it on the welcome board and save-the-date cards. The blackletter typeface added a dramatic flair that contrasted beautifully with lace details and deep burgundy florals. While not your traditional calligraphy font, Hate Love worked surprisingly well for titles and decorative headers. It’s ideal for couples who want to break from tradition and embrace a darker, more mystical aesthetic. Just be sure to pair it with a clean sans serif for readability in body text.

Using Hate Love for Clothing Line Branding and Boutique Tags

I recently launched a small alternative clothing line with a medieval twist. For the tags and swing tags, I used Hate Love across both digital mockups and printed samples. The font translated beautifully to small formats, especially when paired with a minimalist layout. On cotton tote bags and T-shirts, the blackletter font held its shape even when screen-printed in a single color. The charm of Hate Love lies in its balance between legibility and ornate style—perfect for clothing lines that want to stand out without sacrificing clarity.

Hate Love for Digital Downloads and Printable Wall Art

As a printable creator, I often test fonts for use in digital wall art, planner pages, and seasonal printables. Hate Love shines in digital formats, especially when layered with textures like parchment or stone backgrounds. I used it in a Halloween printable set—haunted house illustrations paired with phrases like “Trick or Treat” and “Welcome to the Haunted Woods.” The font’s dramatic weight and character spacing gave each design a bold, vintage feel. It’s also a great choice for Etsy digital listings that target alternative, gothic, or fantasy-themed audiences.

Pairing Hate Love with Other Fonts for Visual Harmony

One of the keys to using Hate Love effectively is knowing how to pair it with complementary fonts. Since it’s a decorative blackletter typeface, using it alone in a design can feel overwhelming. I’ve found success pairing it with modern sans serif fonts like Montserrat or Lato for a clean contrast. For more vintage layouts, a script font like Great Vibes or a serif like Playfair Display works beautifully. These combinations help maintain visual hierarchy while letting Hate Love take center stage where it matters most—like in logos, headers, and product titles.

Practical Considerations: Readability and Licensing for Hate Love

While Hate Love is a stunning font, it’s best suited for display use—think titles, logos, and short phrases rather than long paragraphs. When cutting vinyl for signs or stickers, I recommend testing at different sizes to ensure legibility. At very small sizes (under 20pt), some of the intricate details can blur together, especially on lower-resolution printers. Also, always check the font’s licensing before using it in commercial products. I was happy to find that Hate Love includes commercial use rights, making it safe for use in product packaging, merchandise, and digital downloads sold on platforms like Etsy and Creative Market.
